Naypyidaw Entry Requirements

Naypyidaw Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed October 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Entering Naypyidaw, the capital city of Myanmar, requires all foreign travelers to pass through immigration at one of Myanmar's international airports, most commonly Yangon (RGN) or Mandalay (MDL), before taking a domestic connection. As the administrative capital, Naypyidaw itself is served by Naypyidaw International Airport (NYT), which has limited international flights, primarily from regional hubs. All visitors must have a valid passport, an appropriate visa or travel authorization for Myanmar, and comply with customs and health regulations. The immigration process typically involves presenting your passport, visa, and a completed arrival card. Travelers should be prepared for standard questioning regarding the purpose and duration of their visit. It is important to ensure all documentation is in order before arrival, as visa-on-arrival options are extremely limited and generally not available for tourists. The local authorities enforce entry requirements strictly. Visitors should also be aware that travel to certain restricted areas within Myanmar, which do not include Naypyidaw for typical tourism, may require additional permits. A smooth entry process hinges on having clear travel plans, confirmed accommodation, and sufficient funds for the duration of your stay.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Myanmar requires most foreign nationals to obtain a visa prior to arrival. The primary method for tourists is the eVisa system. A very limited number of nationalities are eligible for visa-free entry.

Visa-Free Entry
14 to 30 days, depending on nationality

Only citizens of a select few countries can enter Myanmar without a visa.

Includes
Brunei Cambodia Indonesia Laos Philippines Thailand Vietnam

Visa-free entry is typically for tourism purposes only. Length of stay varies; for example, Thai nationals receive 14 days, while others like Indonesia may receive 30 days. Always confirm current conditions with the nearest Myanmar embassy.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
Tourist eVisa: 28 days stay, single entry. Business eVisa: 70 days stay, single entry.

The Myanmar eVisa is available online for tourism and business purposes for citizens of over 100 countries.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand European Union member states Japan South Korea Singapore Malaysia
How to Apply: Apply online through the official Myanmar eVisa website. Processing typically takes 3-5 business days. The approved eVisa must be printed and presented upon arrival.
Cost: Approximately $50 USD for Tourist eVisa, $70 USD for Business eVisa (subject to change).

The eVisa is only valid for entry via designated international airports (Yangon, Mandalay, Naypyidaw) and the Thai-Myanmar land border crossings at Tachileik, Myawaddy, and Kawthoung. It is not valid for entry via other land borders.

Visa Required
Varies by visa type (Tourist, Business, etc.), typically 28 days for tourist visas.

Nationalities not eligible for visa-free entry or the eVisa must apply for a traditional visa at a Myanmar embassy or consulate.

How to Apply: Apply in person or by post to a Myanmar diplomatic mission. Requires application forms, passport photos, passport, fee, and sometimes proof of travel and accommodation.

Processing times for embassy visas can be longer than for eVisas. This is the only option for travelers entering Myanmar via land borders not covered by the eVisa scheme.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at a Myanmar international airport (or a land border crossing where eVisa is accepted), you will proceed through immigration, baggage claim, and customs.

1
1. Immigration Checkpoint
Present your passport, printed eVisa (or physical visa), and a completed Arrival Card (distributed on the plane or available at the counter). The immigration officer may ask about your purpose of visit, itinerary, and accommodation. Your photo and fingerprints may be taken.
2
2. Baggage Claim
Proceed to the baggage reclaim area. Ensure you collect all your luggage before moving to the customs area.
3
3. Customs Inspection
Walk through the customs area. You may be asked to declare items or have your luggage scanned. Have your customs declaration form (if required) ready.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry and have at least one blank visa page.
Visa or eVisa
A valid visa, either a sticker in your passport or a printed eVisa approval letter, is mandatory for entry.
Arrival/Departure Card
A two-part card (white Arrival, green Departure) must be completed. The Arrival portion is collected upon entry; keep the Departure portion safe, as it is required when leaving the country.
Proof of Onward Travel
While not always checked, immigration officials may request evidence of a departure ticket from Myanmar.
Proof of Accommodation
You may be asked to provide details of your hotel booking or host in Myanmar.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Print multiple copies of your eVisa approval and hotel bookings. Keep one set with your passport and another in your luggage.
Fill out the Arrival/Departure Card neatly and accurately using a blue or black pen.
Have the address of your first night's accommodation written down to show the immigration officer.
Be polite and patient. Answer questions clearly and concisely.
Keep your Departure Card in a safe place (e.g., with your passport), as losing it can cause delays and fines upon exit.

Customs & Duty-Free

Myanmar customs regulations are strictly enforced. Travelers must declare certain items upon arrival. Failure to declare prohibited or restricted items can result in severe penalties.

Alcohol
2 liters of wine or 1 liter of spirits
Traveler must be over 18 years of age.

200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
Traveler must be over 18 years of age.
Currency
Foreign currency over $10,000 USD or equivalent must be declared.

  • Counterfeit currency and goods
  • Gambling devices
  • Weapons, ammunition, and explosives without special permission
  • Wireless communication devices (e.g., walkie-talkies) without permission

Restricted Items

  • Antiques and artifacts of cultural/historical significance require an export permit from the Department of Archaeology.
  • Jade, gems, and precious metals require purchase receipts and export certification.
  • Medications, psychotropic substances, require a doctor's prescription and should be in original packaging.
  • Drones require prior permission from the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Health Requirements

There are specific health requirements for entry into Myanmar, primarily vaccination certificates for certain diseases. General health precautions are strongly advised.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate: Required if arriving from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine Vaccinations (MMR, Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, Varicella, Polio, Influenza)
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Typhoid
  • Japanese Encephalitis (for long-term stays or rural travel)
  • Rabies (for adventure travelers, children, or those working with animals)
  • Malaria Prophylaxis (risk varies by region and season; Naypyidaw is considered low risk)

Health Insurance

While not mandatory for entry, complete travel health insurance that includes medical evacuation is highly recommended. Healthcare facilities in Naypyidaw are limited for complex issues, and payment is often required upfront.

Current Health Requirements: As of October 2024, there are no COVID-19 vaccination, testing, or quarantine requirements for entry into Myanmar. However, this is subject to change. Check the latest advisories from the Myanmar Ministry of Health and your home country's travel advice before departure.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport and visa. If traveling with only one parent or without parents, a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian(s) is highly recommended, though not always requested by Myanmar immigration.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets (dogs, cats) requires an import permit obtained in advance from the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (LBVD). Pets need a valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered between 30 days and 12 months prior to arrival) and a veterinary health certificate issued within 7 days of travel. Quarantine may be required.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas (eVisa or sticker) cannot be extended beyond their initial validity (28 days). To stay longer, you must leave the country (e.g., to Thailand) and apply for a new visa to re-enter. For long-term stays (work, study, etc.), you must obtain the appropriate visa (e.g., Business, Social, Employment) from a Myanmar embassy before arrival, which can often be extended locally through an agent or sponsor.
